Northwest Ski Resorts: Fun in the Summer Too

By Angela Brown, About.com

Wintertime playgrounds turn into summer recreation heavens at many ski resorts in the Pacific Northwest. Verdant ski trails provide the perfect setting for a host of summertime activities, including hiking, mountain biking and berry picking. Cozy ski lodges become romantic weekend getaways, granting access to a whole range of outdoor adventure as well as every comfort and amenity. These mountain resorts host a number of special summertime events, including outdoor concerts, beer festivals, and mountain biking workshops. Some Northwest ski resorts are true year-round enterprises, offering traditional mountain activities as well as golf, tennis, and more. Sun Valley Resort in Idaho and The Resort at The Mountain in Oregon are two examples.

At Big Mountain Ski Resort in Whitefish, Montana, visitors can enjoy a scenic gondola ride to the top of the mountain. Once at the top, they have access to an extensive network of hiking trails. Hikers can enjoy abundant wildflowers or can pick ripe, juicy huckleberries, depending on the advance of the season. Events on the resort's calendar include concerts and festivals. Mountain biking and fly casting workshops are among the other available activities.

The summer concert series at Silver Mountain in Kellogg, Idaho offers guests the chance to enjoy such artists as Pat Benatar and Cheap Trick in an open-air amphitheater. Silver Mountain is home to the " World's Longest Gondola", which can carry eight people over three miles to the mountaintop. The gondola will also carry mountain bikes - which are available for rental - to the summit. After a long hike, guests can relax in the restaurants and lounges that are located both on the mountaintop and at the gondola base.
