Wild animals and wilderness views. Cushy seats, fine china, and gourmet food. You can enjoy both as a passenger aboard the Alaska Railroad, which operates out of Anchorage. Whether you are looking for a scenic day trip or a multi-day excursion that includes either moderate or adventurous outdoor activities, you will find plenty of tour choices on Alaska Railroad Scenic Rail Tours.
Where You Can Go
You will have the choice of venturing either north or south from Anchorage. The Alaska Railroad's northern route leads to Denali National Park and Preserve and Fairbanks. Northbound passengers will enjoy views of sweeping wilderness plains, sheer granite cliffs, and snowcapped mountain peaks. Along the way, your train will pass over the 295-foot Hurricane Gulch. The breathtaking views of Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain in North America, are truly the highlight of the trip. Along the way, you will delight in the opportunity to see a variety of Alaskan wildlife. The critters you might get a peak at include moose, bears, caribou, wolves, Dall sheep, beavers and waterfowl.
Heading south out of Anchorage, Alaska Railroad passengers can choose to travel to the port cities of Whittier or Seward. Along the route to Whittier, you will travel through two mountain tunnels before skirting the scenic shores of Prince William Sound. The path to Seward passes through dazzling mountain scenery before arriving at Resurrection Bay and the Gulf of Alaska.
