Black Mountain Forestry Center

Located near Mt. Baker, the Black Mountain Forestry Center makes a great destination for a fun and educational day trip. Families will enjoy the opportunity to learn more about both the forestry industry and nature conservation. The mission of the Black Mountain Forestry Center, according to their web site, is to "to promote awareness and provide education for the general public about our forests, their history, ecology, and value as a renewable natural resource."

Open only during the summer months, the center offers visitors a variety of informative and recreational experiences. Among the highlights:

Tours
Afternoon bus tours begin each Sunday at 1:00 p.m. during the summer. The tour will allow you to see the forest in various stages of growth and to learn some of the history behind timber management. Private tours are also available.

Gerdrum House Museum
Visitors will have the opportunity to see artifacts and displays that illuminate the daily lives of a turn-of-the-century logging family, the Gerdrums. The Museum also offers a small gift shop. Open Saturday & Sunday during the summer months, 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

World of Wood Festival
This August festival celebrates wood and wood products. You will enjoy living history demonstrations, forest products exhibits, vendors, food, and nature presentations.

  • Old-fashioned, working sawmill

  • Timber harvest machinery in action
