Winter Vacations in Oregon

Ideas for Oregon Winter Getaways

There are several places in Oregon that are particularly fun to visit during the winter months. With lots of mountain snow, you can enjoy the full range of snow sports including downhill skiing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. You can also enjoy snuggling by the fire while storm watching on the Oregon Coast or while viewing the winter wonderland of a snowy mountain landscape. Here are my suggestions for winter vacations in Oregon.

Bend and Central Oregon

With mountains to the west, plains to the east, and an annual snowfall measured in feet, Bend and the Central Oregon region are heaven for snow sport enthusiasts. Mount Bachelor Ski Resort is the biggest draw, with terrain for downhill skiing, Nordic skiing, and snowboarding. Home to 14 different sno-parks such as Virginia Meissner and Swampy Lake, Central Oregon is the place to sled, snowshoe, snowmobile, and generally frolic in the snow.

Mount Hood

Mount Hood is home to five ski areas and miles of cross country ski and snowshoe trails. Two of Mount Hood's sno-parks offer trails for snowmobiling. This wealth of winter fun is accompanied by great facilities and accommodations at such places as Timberline Lodge, The Resort at the Mountain, and The Grand Lodges Mt. Hood. All of these are less than a 2-hour drive from Portland, Oregon.

Mount Hood Ski Areas:

  • Mount Hood Ski Bowl
  • Summit Ski Area
  • Timberline Ski Area
  • Mt. Hood Meadows
  • Cooper Spur Ski Resort

Joseph and the Wallowa Mountain Area

Located in northeast Oregon, the area in and around the Wallowa Mountains gets some serious snow, providing the setting for some serious winter fun. The small resort community of Joseph lies at the center of it all, surrounded by the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest and the Eagle Cap Wilderness Area. Trails for cross country skiing, showshoeing, and snowmobiling are available in abundance in locations throughout the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. The Eagle Cap Wilderness Area offers both backcountry skiing and snowshoeing.

The Oregon Coast

There's something captivating about the wild wind and crashing waves that arrive on the Oregon Coast during the winter months. Especially when you can enjoy them from the comfort of your oceanfront room, snuggled by the fireplace with a cup of cocoa. In addition to cozy lodgings, the towns along the Oregon Coast offer charming shops and galleries, fun-filled arcades and excellent dining that can all be enjoyed whatever the weather.
